6.5-Inch Component Speaker Sets Compared: 2-Way, 3-Way, Slim and Active from Focal, Kicker, Hertz and Infinity

A component set splits the tweeter from the woofer so the highs can sit higher in the dash or pillar, which is why it usually sounds clearer than a coaxial. The table gives the specs each listing states, and the sections below explain the differences.

2-way, 3-way and convertible

Most sets here are 2-way: a woofer and a tweeter per side with a crossover.

Slim sets for shallow doors

The Focal ES 165 K2S has a woofer only about 2-1/4 inches deep, made for doors without room for a regular woofer, use slim-fit tweeters for tight factory tweeter spots, per their listings. Among the sets that list a woofer depth, the Kicker CS 46CSS654 (1-11/16 inches), Kicker KS 51KSS6504, 51KSS6704 and 51KSS365 (1-13/16 inches) and Focal ISU 165 (1.9 inches) are the shallowest.

Active builds and single woofers

See our 6- and 8-channel amp comparison for amps with a built-in sound processing.

The Focal K2 Power 165KR and 165KRX2 are earlier-generation sets, and their listings say the shop confirms the exact kit, condition before you buy.

6.5-Inch Car Speakers Compared: Coaxial vs Component from Kicker, Focal, Hertz and Pioneer

Pick a coaxial pair like the Pioneer TS-G1620F, Kicker DS 43DSC6504 for a simple drop-in upgrade on a factory radio. Pick a high-sensitivity pair like the Focal ICU 165 or ISU 165 if you are keeping the factory radio and want more volume from it. Pick a component set like the Kicker KS 51KSS6504 when you can mount the tweeters up high and plan to add an amplifier.

Car Tweeters Compared

A tweeter plays the highs: cymbals, voices and detail. Adding a pair, or replacing worn factory dash or pillar tweeters, is one of the simplest ways to make a system sound clearer. On our listings the domes are silk, aluminum, titanium, cloth or ceramic-coated aluminum, and sizes are 3/4 inch or 1 inch. Most are sold in pairs. Some come with in-line crossovers, which keep bass out of the tweeter, and some do not list one. The mounting depth decides whether a tweeter fits a shallow factory spot.

Questions on 6.5-Inch Component Speaker Sets Compared: 2-Way, 3-Way, Slim and Active from Focal, Kicker, Hertz and Infinity

Component or coaxial?

A component set puts the tweeter in its own spot, usually higher in the dash or pillar, for a clearer front stage. A coaxial mounts the tweeter on the woofer and is simpler to install. See our 6.5-inch coaxial vs component guide too.

Do component sets need an amplifier?

Not all.

My doors are shallow. What fits?

The Focal ES 165 K2S woofer is about 2-1/4 inches deep, and the Kicker CS 46CSS654 lists 1-11/16 inches. Shop by vehicle shows the verified door size for your car, and we check depth before you buy.

Do you install component sets?

Yes. We install them in our bay at 22025 S Avalon Blvd Ste A in Carson, including the tweeter mounting. Call or text first to set up a time.
