Amp Wiring Kits Compared: 8-Gauge, 4-Gauge and 1/0-Gauge from Stinger, Kicker and Rockford Fosgate

Pick the Stinger SK4281 8-gauge kit for a compact or lower-power amp. For most single amps up to the mid-power range, pick a 4-gauge kit: the Stinger SK4641 or SK4241, the Kicker 46CK4 with an RCA cable, or the Rockford Fosgate RFK4X with oxygen-free copper wire, a 100 A fuse and a 16-foot RCA cable. For big mono amps and multi-amp builds, step up to the Stinger SK4201 1/0-gauge kit. We match the gauge and fuse to your amp before the install.

What a wiring kit does

An amp wiring kit brings power from the battery to the amp, grounds it and protects the run with a fuse. The kits here include power and ground wire, a fuse holder, remote turn-on wire and terminals, and some add speaker wire and an RCA signal cable, per their listings.

Every kit here is on our listings, and the shop installs the kit as part of the amp job in our own bay at 22025 S Avalon Blvd Ste A in Carson. For choosing the amp itself, see our car amplifier buying guide.

Side by side

This table is built only from our own product listings. Where a listing does not state a part, the cell says so instead of guessing.

A lower gauge number is a thicker wire: 1/0 is thicker than 4, and 4 is thicker than 8.

8-gauge for small amps

The Stinger SK4281 is an 8-gauge kit with power and ground wire, an inline fuse holder, remote wire, speaker wire and terminals. Its listing says 8-gauge is right for compact and lower-power amps, like a small 4-channel or a mini sub amp, and that we move bigger amps to a 4-gauge kit.

4-gauge for most single amps

The Stinger SK4641 and SK4241 are 4-gauge kits with power and ground wire, an inline fuse holder, remote wire, speaker wire and terminals. The Kicker 46CK4 adds an RCA signal cable.

The Rockford Fosgate RFK4X lists the most detail: 17 feet of 4 AWG power wire, 3 feet of 4 AWG ground wire, a Maxi fuse holder with a 100 A fuse, a 16-foot twisted-pair RCA cable, 30 feet of 16 AWG speaker wire and 20 feet of remote wire. Its wire is 100 percent oxygen-free copper rather than copper-clad aluminum, per its listing.

1/0-gauge for big systems

The Stinger SK4201 is a 1/0-gauge kit with heavy power and ground cable, a fuse holder, remote wire and terminals, for big mono amps and multi-amp builds where 4-gauge would run warm, per its listing. We decide whether the car also needs a battery or charging upgrade when we quote the install.

Car Subwoofer Buying Guide: Sub, Box, Amp and Wiring for Your Ride

The right sub setup depends on three things: how much space you can give up, how hard you want it to hit, and what radio you are keeping. Small space and a factory radio usually means a powered sub. A trunk or truck cab you can give up means a loaded box and a mono amp. Here is how we point people at the counter, with the parts that come along for the ride.
