CarPlay and Android Auto Receivers Compared: Wired vs Wireless from Pioneer, Kenwood, JVC and BOSS

Pick a wired CarPlay receiver like the Pioneer DMH-1800NEX or Kenwood DMX4710S if you are fine plugging the phone in and want the lowest price for the feature. Pick a wireless one like the Pioneer DMH-W3000NEX, Kenwood DMX5710S or JVC KW-M695BW if you want the phone to stay in your pocket. Step up to the Kenwood Excelon DMX809S or DMX958XR, or JVC KW-M875BW for a sharper screen, higher preamp voltage and more camera inputs when you plan to add amps.

Wired or wireless CarPlay

Wired CarPlay and Android Auto run through a USB cable and charge the phone while you drive. Wireless connects over Wi-Fi when you get in the car, so short trips are easier. Every wireless model in this table also takes a USB connection per its listing, except the Pioneer DMH-W3050NEX, whose listing does not say.

Every receiver here is a double-DIN model on our listings. We install in our own bay at 22025 S Avalon Blvd Ste A, often the same day.

Side by side

This table is built only from our own product listings. Where a listing does not state a spec, the cell says so instead of guessing.

Brands list power different ways, some as RMS and some as max, so compare loosely. Preamp voltage matters only if you add an amplifier: a higher voltage sends the amp a stronger, cleaner signal.

Wired: the most for the money

The BOSS Audio BE7ACP is the budget pick: a 7-inch capacitive screen, wired CarPlay and Android Auto and Bluetooth, with no CD or DVD drive. The Pioneer DMH-1800NEX and DMH-2000NEX use a 6.8-inch capacitive screen; the 2000NEX adds 4V preamps, built-in HD Radio and iDatalink Maestro compatibility.

The Kenwood DMX4710S has a sharper 1024 x 600 screen and a rear camera input with parking guidelines.

Wireless: the phone stays in your pocket

The Pioneer DMH-W3000NEX and DMH-W3050NEX sit on an L-shaped 2-DIN chassis that leaves more room behind the dash for wiring and modules; the W3050NEX adds a built-in HD Radio tuner.

The Kenwood DMX5710S pairs a 1024 x 600 screen with a short chassis and built-in Wi-Fi. The JVC KW-M695BW has a built-in hands-free microphone and a short chassis, and the KW-M785BW adds an HDMI input, front and rear camera inputs and 4V preamps in a chassis 75 mm deep.

For systems with amps

The Kenwood Excelon DMX809S has 5V preamps and a 3-way network mode with crossovers and time alignment, about 75 mm deep.

The JVC KW-M875BW has 5V preamps, a USB-C port that charges at up to 3A and three camera inputs. The Kenwood Excelon Reference DMX958XR has a 6.75-inch 720p HD screen, three 5V preamp outputs, four camera inputs and LDAC Hi-Res wireless audio, in a chassis under 3.5 inches deep.

What else goes in

A new receiver also needs the right dash kit, wiring harness and antenna adapter for your car, and often a steering wheel control adapter or an iDatalink Maestro module to keep factory features. Some cars cannot take an aftermarket radio at all. Pick your year, make and model in Shop by vehicle to see your dash opening and the parts we list for it, and we confirm the fit before you buy.

Backup Camera Guide: Kenwood Cameras and the Receivers with Camera Inputs We Carry

For most cars, the simple setup is a receiver with a camera input plus the Kenwood CMOS-230LP1, which Kenwood lists as working with most aftermarket receivers that have a camera input. For a sharper picture, the Kenwood CMOS-740HDLP shoots 1280 x 720 HD, but it connects through HD-TVI and works only with select Kenwood receivers that support HD cameras. If you also want a front or side camera, pick a receiver with more than one camera input, like the JVC KW-M875BW, Kenwood DMX958XR
