For most cars, the simple setup is a receiver with a camera input plus the Kenwood CMOS-230LP1, which Kenwood lists as working with most aftermarket receivers that have a camera input. For a sharper picture, the Kenwood CMOS-740HDLP shoots 1280 x 720 HD, but it connects through HD-TVI and works only with select Kenwood receivers that support HD cameras. If you also want a front or side camera, pick a receiver with more than one camera input, like the JVC KW-M875BW, Kenwood DMX958XR
A backup camera needs two things: a camera at the back of the car and a screen that has a camera input. Every receiver in our table below lists at least one camera input, so the camera picture shows on the same touchscreen you use for CarPlay, Android Auto and music.
Every camera and receiver in this guide is on our listings, and we install them in our own bay at 22025 S Avalon Blvd Ste A in Carson. If you are also replacing the radio, see our CarPlay receiver comparison.
The CMOS-230LP1 is a universal camera with a license plate bracket, a waterproof housing, a 4.92-foot camera cable and a 24.6-foot power cable. The CMOS-740HDLP adds 1280 x 720 HD video at 30 fps, a 180-degree horizontal view, high dynamic range, 1.0 lux low-light sensitivity and an IP67 rating, all per its listing.
The catch with the HD camera is the connection. It uses HD-TVI, so it works only with select Kenwood receivers that support HD cameras. Ask us to match it to your receiver before you buy.
Kenwood backup cameras compared, from our product listings.
| Camera | Picture | Horizontal view | Vertical view | Weather rating | Works with |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kenwood CMOS-230LP1 | 330,000 effective pixels, 1/3.6 in CMOS | About 128 degrees | About 103 degrees | Waterproof housing | Most aftermarket receivers with a camera input, per Kenwood |
| Kenwood CMOS-740HDLP | 1280 x 720 HD at 30 fps, 1/3.8 in CMOS | 180 degrees | 103 degrees | IP67 | Only select Kenwood receivers that support HD cameras (HD-TVI) |
This table is built only from our own product listings. It shows the camera inputs each listing names, and it marks HD camera support only where the listing says so.
One rear camera input covers a backup camera. Receivers with two or more inputs, like the JVC KW-M785BW or Kenwood DMX1058XR, leave room for a front camera too.
Camera inputs on the receivers we carry, from our product listings. "Not in our listing" means our product page does not say whether that receiver takes an HD camera, so ask us before you count on it.

Some trucks already have a camera wired to the factory screen. The PAC RPK4-FD2101 kit for 2015-2019 Ford F-150 and 2017-2019 Super Duty keeps the factory cameras and steering wheel controls when you put in an aftermarket radio, and includes a camera retention cable. The PAC RPK4-CH4101 for 2013-2018 Ram and 2019 Ram Classic adds a 5.2-inch screen that handles camera selection along with climate and vehicle settings.
Both PAC kits are sold without the radio, so you pick a receiver to go with them.
Text us with your year, make and model and whether you are keeping the factory radio, and we will tell you which camera and receiver work together in your car.

Pick the radio around your car and how you use your phone, not around the biggest screen on the wall. Decide wired or wireless, figure out what shape your dash allows, and plan to keep your steering wheel buttons and factory features. Then we confirm the exact parts for your vehicle before anything comes apart.
Read itYour car runs great, but the radio is stuck in the past. A new head unit with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto is one of the most useful upgrades we do, and here is exactly what goes into it.
Read itFrom $100 to $250, you get a Bluetooth receiver for a single-DIN dash, like the JVC KD-X280BT and the BOSS Audio BE7ACP with wired CarPlay. From $250 to $500, you get a double-DIN touchscreen with wired CarPlay, like the Kenwood DMX4710S or Pioneer DMH-1800NEX, or wireless CarPlay, like the JVC KW-M785BW. From $500 to $1,000 come HD screens, more camera inputs and features like built-in GPS. At $1,000 and up are the 9- to 11-inch floating screens. Every price in this guide is the listed price on the product page.
